Who doesn’t want a bright and shiny smile? At Steven F. Hinchey, DMD in Glastonbury, CT, one of the main inquiries we get from patients is that they want their teeth whitened. There are no contraindications about teeth whitening, although not all people end up with the same results.
There’s nothing wrong with wanting whiter teeth, and that’s something we explain to all our patients at Steven F. Hinchey, DMD. We whiten teeth almost daily. How quickly you get your teeth whitened will depend on your patience. We have different protocols that fit different people and goals.
One of the questions we get all the time is whether it’s safe to whiten your teeth at home. The truth is that without proper guidance and professional advice, whitening your teeth at home might not be the best idea. We understand that whitening products are easily accessible commercially, but people need to know how often to use them.
Teeth whitening relies on bleach to remove stains. Exposing your teeth to too much bleach will lead to erosion of the enamel. Once the enamel is eroded, it doesn’t grow back. We can give you advice on how to make the best use of these whitening products without injuring your teeth.
At Steven F. Hinchey, DMD, how fast we whiten your teeth depends on what you want. If you have an important event in two days and need your teeth whitened as soon as possible, we can whiten them for you in about 1-2 hours.
It’s recommended, however, that we take our time with whitening. If you’re not in a major hurry, we can do it over several visits. We can also start the process in the office then tell you how to continue whitening at home.
Patients need to understand that it’s not always possible to whiten teeth. Those that are deeply stained might not benefit at all from whitening procedures. Synthetic products and artificial teeth like veneers, crowns, and others are resistant to whitening. Once they’re stained, the only way to remove the stain would be to replace them.
