Preventive Dentistry in Glastonbury, CT

Would you rather keep your teeth healthy for many years, or would you rather let them suffer from diseases? Preventive dentistry is all about keeping teeth in good condition and protecting them from illnesses.

The trend of preventing diseases is taking over all medicine. It’s better for patients, less time-consuming, and cheaper to prevent conditions than to let them happen and treat them. At Steven F. Hinchey, DMD, we believe this is the best approach to dental health and oral hygiene.

Preventive Dentistry for Adults

It’s easier to care for adult teeth than children’s teeth. Adults are more aware of the value of keeping their oral hygiene in good shape. We recommend brushing your teeth at least twice a day, preferably with a fluoride-containing toothpaste. It’s also recommended that you floss at least once per day. This helps get rid of any food and bacteria stuck between your teeth.

Keeping up with your regular check-ups is important too. During these check-ups, we’ll examine your teeth and oral cavity for any signs of problems. We’ll also perform cleanings that are important for getting rid of plaque and bacterial build-up. You won’t be able to remove plaque and build-up at home as the necessary equipment is only found at the dentist’s office.

Preventive Dentistry for Children

Children are more likely to get dental caries because they prefer sweets and aren’t as diligent about brushing their teeth. Along with bringing your children in for their check-ups, you should ensure that they also brush their teeth at home.

Fluoride treatments using high concentrations of fluoride can keep their teeth strong and halt any ongoing decay. It’s not a good idea to do these treatments at home because using too much fluoride can cause permanent damage to teeth.

Dental sealants are made of composite resin and are used to fill up naturally occurring grooves on the molars. Blocking these grooves prevents bacteria from using them as hiding spots and thereby protects molars from possible cavities.
