Fluoride Treatment in Glastonbury, CT

Fluoride Treatment in Glastonbury, CT

Fluoride treatments provided at a dental clinic have a much higher fluoride concentration than that in toothpaste. Fluoride is so valuable in dentistry because it strengthens the enamel and fights harmful bacteria in our oral cavities.

The Procedure

At Steven F. Hinchey, DMD, fluoride treatments only take a few minutes. We’ll apply the fluoride to your teeth using a brush or swab. Fluoride is usually in the form of foam or gel. Another method of applying fluoride is to provide it in a mouth rinse or a tray positioned over the teeth.

Why can’t this be done at home? The amount of fluoride needs to be calculated. Using too little fluoride would be useless, and too much of it can be harmful.

Who Needs Fluoride Treatments?

These treatments are recommended in children. They’re also advised for adults who are more likely to get dental cavities. Those who smoke, don’t brush their teeth, have a dry mouth, and drink excessive alcohol are more vulnerable to infections and, ultimately, cavities.

Fluoride is available in several products that we consume throughout the day like water, tea, fish, and food cooked with water. These foods and drinks provide us with a basal level of necessary fluoride, but some people need more concentrated amounts that are available in in-office treatments.

Cost of Treatments

For children, fluoride treatments are commonly covered by insurance. Unfortunately, that’s not the case with adults. For more information regarding the cost, please call our office.

Fluoride Side Effects

Fluoride is valuable and beneficial, but too much of it can be harmful. Excessive fluoride exposure can stain teeth and create white specks on them. On the other hand, consuming too much of it systemically can lead to diarrhea, nausea, and fatigue. That’s why the right doses need to be calculated by the dentist.

Fluoride treatments are painless and not time-consuming. We’ll tell you how frequently you need them after assessing your dental condition when you visit us.
